* a hand-painted canvas,

* a latch-hook,

* a large colour picture.
* A wall hanging kit also contains the
yarn and the working instructions for
the suspension loops.
* In the shaped rug kits the binding
tape for finishing the edge is also
included.
Sort out the yarn
First compare the small colour squares painted on the canvas edge to the
yarn colours. The colours on the canvas may slightly differ from the
yarn colours. In order to avoid confusion it is advisable to tie
into each colour square a thread of the corresponding colour.
A. Place the canvas straight before you on the table so that the
selvedge sides are at the left and the right.
B. Start latch-hooking at the bottom left hand corner.
C. Complete each row, making knots from the left to the right and from
the bottom to the top.
Knot
Hold the 2 ends of a thread between left thumb and index finger and pass
the loop around the latch-hook.
Insert the
latch-hook under the weaving thread of the canvas and pull it back again
until the latch lies on top of the threads.
Put the ends of the thread inside the open hook and gently pull back the
latch-hook, until the latch is closed and holds the thread.
Release the ends of the thread and pull the latch-hook through the loop,
while holding the canvas firmly.
Slightly tug the ends of the thread to make the knot firm.
Finishing latch hook, wall hangings and shaped rugs
Carefully cut off the surplus canvas at approx. 3
cm from the hooked design. Trim the canvas only a
small section at a time to prevent fraying.
At the same time
fold the edge backwards and stitch it on to the backside. Make sure
that each square of the unpainted canvas is sewn on to the threads of
the painted canvas and not to the latch hooks. Finish the
complete outline of your latch hook rug in this way.
How to attach the binding
tape:
Put the binding tape close to the outer edge of the latch hooks and
sew it securely to the canvas.
Fold the tape back and sew the other side of the
tape to the threads on the backside of the canvas. Again sew one small section at a time
by making small pleats in the tape where
necessary. It is important to sew the binding securely with
relatively small stitches so that each square of the canvas is secured
to both sides of the binding.
Your shaped rug or carpet is now finished and ready to be enjoyed for many years.
